Frequently Asked Questions
I got a call saying my power would be cut off. Am I being scammed?
Periodically, phone scammers call Nixa Utilities customers threatening to cut off utility services unless payment is made immediately over the phone or using gift cards. This is a scam.
If you are truly behind on your Nixa Utilities bill payments, we will send paper notices by mail (as well as email notifications if you have signed up for those) notifying you that your bill is past due and that if you do not pay on time, your utilities services will be turned off. Nixa Utilities does not currently call customers when they are past due. Also, we NEVER accept gift cards as a form of payment.
If in doubt, HANG UP. Do not make payment over the phone unless you called our real number 417-725-3229. You can also hang up if a caller says your payment is late, and then call us to see if your account is truly past due. Or, check your account online using NixaPay or myNixa.
Know the difference between a legitimate past-due notice and these threatening scams and be sure to warn vulnerable loved ones.
NOTE REGARDING DEBT COLLECTION:
Nixa Utilities uses National Recovery Agency to collect outstanding balances on utility accounts that are aged more than 180 days. When they seek to collect a debt for Nixa Utilities, they will reference your actual Nixa Utilities account number. If you are contacted by National Recovery Agency, be aware this is indeed a legitimate debt collection attempt. They may call you or use other methods to contact you in order to collect the debt.

FAQ
What does a scam look like?
In August of 2019, Nixa Utilities began using an automated notification system which generates phone calls and/or text messages to alert customers when their account is past due.
We know that occasionally scammers may call Nixa residents pretending to be government agencies or utility companies, so here are some tips on how to know the difference between our authentic calls and any scammers who may pretend to be us.
- Scammers are humans who pressure you to make payment before the end of the call. Nixa Utilities calls are made by an automated system which cannot take payment over the phone, and these calls are only meant to remind customers that their account is past due.
- Scammers ask for payment in the form of gift cards. Nixa Utilities will never ask for payment in the form of gift cards.
- Scammers will tell you there is no other way to make payment other than on the phone “right now”. Nixa Utilities reminds you of other ways you can pay, such as at our office, online at Nixa.com, or by hanging up and calling 725-3229.
How can I pay my bill?
The City of Nixa accepts cash, check, money orders, debit/credit cards and phone payments. There is a drop box located at the drive thru window of the utility office for after hour payments.
What are Demand Charges?
Demand charges are charges during peak usage.
Demand charges are based on the highest 15-minute average usage recorded on the demand meter within a given month. If your facility tends to use a lot of power over short periods, your demand charges will comprise a larger part of your bill. If you use power at a more consistent rate throughout the month, your demand charges will generally be a smaller part of your bill.
