Nixa Solar Farm

Have you passed the solar farm on Highway 14 in Nixa?

Contrary to popular belief, the Nixa Solar Farm is not owned by the City of Nixa. The City of Nixa purchases power from this facility which is owned by the Missouri Electric Commission which is the power arm of the Missouri Public Utility Alliance (MPUA). MPUA is a long-time Hometown Utility partner with Nixa. At the time of its construction, the solar farm was the largest in the state of Missouri.

The groundbreaking ceremony for this facility was held on June 27, 2017. The dedication ceremony was held on November 14, 2017.

The City of Nixa has an agreement to purchase 100% of the power generated from this 72-acre facility which includes 33,288 solar panels. The solar farm is capable of generating up to 7.92 megawatts of AC power which provides over 15 million kilowatt hours of energy per year.

The project reduces the city’s carbon footprint (Co2 emissions) by 10,542 metric tons per year, equivalent to burning over 11 million pounds of coal or nearly 1.2 million gallons of gasoline.

Purchase power from this facility allows for transmission cost savings of approximately $2.5 million over the 25-year contract. These savings mean Nixa Utilities can continue to keep rates low for Nixa Utilities electric customers while we continue to improve our electric infrastructure and connect new homes and businesses in our growing community.

This savings eventually contributed to our ability to actually LOWER the electric rates we charge to Nixa Utilities customers in 2022.

The facility was initially owned by Gardner Capital of Springfield. MC Power of Lee’s Summit was the construction contractor and initial operator of the facility. Financing and Tax Credit Equity Investment was provided by Central Bank of the Ozarks for the construction.
